Failed Installation examines the conflicted physical relationship between body and land
through a series of repetitive actions developed directly on the ground with soil. The
performance stages gestures of violent impact, ingestion and expulsion of dirt, attempted
penetration, seduction, and escape. These movements probe the complex dynamics of
homeland and belonging, where the earth simultaneously nurtures, wounds, shapes, and
displaces. In the three-channel installation, projections surround the viewer, creating a
physical situation in which one is implicated in the work yet unable to see all channels at once.
Sound built from live performance recordings and a recurring low bass frequency intensifies
the persistent atmosphere of tension and unease. The body itself emerges as a failed
installation, caught in an unending cycle, unable to fully settle into the ground or completely
detach from it.
